APSTAR-IA has the same extensive coverage as APSTAR-I. In addition, its footprint has been enhanced with the inclusion of India.

APSTAR-IA is also a HS-376 communication satellite built by Hughes Space and Communications International, Inc. The satellite has 24 C-Band medium power transponders used for the same communications services as APSTAR-I. Twelve of these transponders have been assigned for the India coverage.

APSTAR-IA was launched in July 1996 and commenced commercial operation in September 1996.
