Media Release
The solar cells panels of APSTAR-IIR were unfolded on 17 October 1997, the day the satellite was launched into space. The two sets of Ku-band antennae were also deployed successfully, transmitting Ku-band beacon signal, and the Three-axis Body-stabilizing System of the satellite is perfect working condition.
The Satellite Control Centre of APT Satellite in Tai Po, Hong Kong, will start in-orbit tests for the satellite’s transponders on 28 October 1997. When all in-orbit tests are completed, APSTAR-IIR will immediately begin its commercial service.
Currently, it has a lease out rate or commitment over 50% and is expected to generate promising income for the Company. Together with the other two in-orbit satellites APSTAR-I and APSTAR- IA, APSTAR-IIR will provide transponder services for broadcasting and telecommunications sectors in more than 100 countries throughout Asia, Europe, Africa, and Australia, serving approximately 75% of the world’s population.
