in the Media Conference Prior to the Cocktail Party to Celebrate the Success of Positioning of APSTAR-IIR Satellite and the Completion of In-orbit Testing

Honourable friends of media, ladies and gentlemen,

Prior to the Cocktail Party to Celebrate the Success of Positioning of APSTAR-IIR Satellite and the Completion of In-orbit Testing, I would like, on behalf of APT Satellite Holdings Ltd. to announce that the APSTAR-IIR Satellite was successfully positioned on 76.5 degrees E longitude on 27th October, 1997 after its successful launch using the Long march 3B Launch Vehicle by China Great Wall Industrial Corporation at 3:13a.m. on 17th October, 1997 and the in-orbit testing of the satellite was also completed on 14th November, 1997. The testing results indicate that all prime specifications of the satellite fully comply with the design requirements and the satellite works normally. The APSTAR-IIR satellite will commence operation soon.

APT Satellite Holdings Ltd. is one of the leading satellite operations in the Asia Pacific region including China. Currently, it has three in-orbit communications satellites, i.e. APSTAR-I, APSTAR-IA and APSTAR-IIR respectively, with 92 transponders (76 C-Band and 16 Ku-Band transponders), providing satellite broadcasting and communication services to over 100 countries over Asia, Europe, Africa and Australia or approximately 75% of the world's population.

APSTAR-IIR is a FS-1300 high powered satellite built by Space Systems / Loral Inc. with a mission life over 15 years. This satellite has 28 C-Band and 16 Ku-Band transponders, with TWTA power level of 60 watts and 110 watts respectively. As APSTAR-IIR satellite is equipped with higher Equivalent Isotopic Radiated Power (EIRP) values and more reliable Ku-Band transponders, the satellite can directly transmit the TV programs to the densely populated areas it covers and provides foundation for the development of Direct-To-Home satellite TV broadcasting. At present, the lease-out rates of APSTAR-I and APSTAR-IA have exceeded 90%, whilst the lease-out rate and commitment of APSTAR-IIR is about 50%, enabling APT Satellite Holdings Ltd. to gain considerable revenue.

Amid the recent turmoil in global stock markets, the share price of APT Satellite has been stable and remained strong, which is attributable to the successful launch and positioning of APSTAR-IIR.
